Discover the legacy of the two frontiersmen, Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, at the North Dakota Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center. It is located 38 miles north of Bismarck along the Lewis & Clark Trail, at the intersection of US Highway 38 and ND Highway 200A in Washburn. You can experience the heroic and human sides of these explorers and their friendship with the area’s Native Americans, who helped them survive the winter. View the world-famous artwork of Karl Bodmer, who chronicled Plains Indian life and landscape along the Missouri River.
The center has recently expanded, with a new exhibit gallery telling the story of Fort Clark and the fur trade and steamboat era. A spacious rest area is provided, along with a gift shop to take home a part of the Lewis & Clark Trail experience.
Two miles northwest of the interpretive center is the reconstructed Fort Mandan. The quarters of the expedition during the winter of 1804-05 are replicated.
